Open new windows in the background

I've been playing with the tabbed, multi-page browsers Opera and MyIE2
enough now to come to some conclusions. The tabbed aspect seems
unnecessary and redundant with the Windows window manager, and the
benefits of these browsers could obtain without tabs, if only the control
these alternatives allow for tabs could be applied to ordinary windows.
This isn't my original idea; I got it from yet another browser, the 1X Net
Browser (http://www.scitrav.com/1X/home.asp)This browser does windows
according to my biases, but is just a little too minimalist.

What I'm wondering is whether there are any "fixes" around that the user
can apply te IE 6 to allow greater control over windows. The 1X adds one
important command: shift-click on a hyperlink, and the window opens in the
background. This one command makes a tremendous difference, because you
can collect pages without interrupting the user's ongoing activity.

Has anyone thought to either patch or provide editing instructions to give
IE 6 this functionality_?
