Open more than one document while in Word

I am trying to open more than one Word document in a single instance of Word. Previously, I could open more than one document and could arrange them to view all at once. Now when I try, it opens the new document in a new session of Word. All of the tool bars, etc. make the viewable area of the document very small

Any help is appreciated.
