Open link in new window makes original window close

When I go to open link in new window, it does open the
link in a new window, but it closes my original window as
well. This is rather annoying, and just started
happening, I dowmloaded critical updates not to long ago,
mabye has something to do with it? And help is
appriciated.

Hi Mike - Look in IE6 Tools|Internet Options|Advanced and see if you have
"Reuse windows for launching shortcuts"-ON checked. If so, then either
uncheck it, or make a habit of using SHIFT when you click on a shortcut in
order to have it open in a separate, new window.

Please check the box that lets you include the previous message

Three more points.

First, that option is one of the ones which apparently requires restart.
Did you close all IE windows and verify that iexplore.exe was no longer
an active process (e.g. in Task Manager) before concluding that Jim's
suggestion didn't work?

Second, you didn't refer to Jim's workaround. Is that what you meant by

If so I think you may need to try an IE Repair but you didn't disclose
your OS so that is unnecessarily difficult to help you with too.

The most commonly available method (but not usually available to
XP users) would be to Run... (e.g. press Win-R and enter

rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance

A successful repair requires a reboot so although it doesn't force
you to you might as well shut down *all* programs before starting it.
In particular you should disable any anti-virus scanner which
might interfere with the process.

I occasionally post instructions to XP users which can simulate
the effect of a successful repair for Windows 2000 users.
Use FixIE.inf as a search term if you need to find that.


Third, repair is what we would recommend for your symptom
when there is no possibility of interference from third-party programs.
Increasingly that is usually the cause but nobody ever bothers disclosing
that information either. See the multitude of posts which refer to spyware,
malware, scumware, etc. for suggestions on how to deal with that.
In fact, Henri Leboeuf has posts which suggest that Yahoo Companion
may be in this category and fit your symptom description exactly.

I am having the same problem, ervery time I go to a page,
the old one disappears. I am using OS XP Home edition. My
browser is IE6. Can you give me some idea what I can do, I
have checked the advanced box in tools/options etc.
