BlankAfter I backup the Registry. and try to import it back in to check it,
I get
a message that the file cannot be imported because a Key was open.
How can I assure keys are closed before I backup ?

Backing up the Registry really isn't an important operation. The
Registry is dependant on the overall state of the computer. This
includes applications, system modules and updates, etc. If you
backup the Registry and attempt to restore it after other changes
are made to the computer you will have a miss-matched system.
I would never attempt to import a "Full" registry (Exported) to
a running system. Numerous keys will be locked out (Permissions)
and doing an overwrite could end up with duplicated entries.

The best way to preserve the state of a PC is an image backup.
(Drive Image, Ghost, BootItNG, etc).
