Open applications not showing on taskbar

About a week ago the buttons for open applications & documents disappeared
from my taskbar. Now I can only switch between apps by using the task manager.

I performed a system restore and the buttons reappeared. But soon
disappeared again (soon after I re-downloaded the latest security patches).
The Operating System is Windows XP Pro SP2. I am the administrator. Other
users aren't affected.

Thankyou. I also have had this annoying problem, and this fix worked just
great.
