msnews.com

for xp pro, my lan connects thru a trendnet router, wired, and a foundry
switch, no domain, using workgroup
3 pc's out of 6 don't fully see a 7th/server, in win explorer, the
7th/server shows up in my network places but can't see the shared c drive. i
get an msg that i might not have permissions and path can't be found. the
7th/server has an financial app that requires a mapped drive from the
client pcs. the c:drive on the 7th is networked shared and enabled for users
to change files. 2 of the 3 have a fixed ip and rest are dhcp. from all the
pcs that don't see with winexp, i can ping both the pc name and ip address
ok. in one pc i put an entry in lmhosts. the results of nbtstat -c show the
7th/server, but still no go. have checked and dble checked but don't see any
differences from the pcs that connect ok and those that don't. any
ideas?????????

This would frequently be a misconfigured or overlooked personal firewall, or
other security component. There are several other possibilities too, and any
might be the cause of your problem. Read this article with an open mind.

Make sure that NetBT is explicitly Enabled on all computers.

Why are you using fixed IP addresses? Compare "ipconfig /all" on all computers!

You've done a lot of tweaking. We may end up starting you over. Let's look at
"browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from EACH computer, so we can diagnose the
problem. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow instructions
precisely (download browstat!):

Now, running and posting ipconfig and browstat logs from each computer will be a
pain in the ass. So run what you will, but the more that you can provide, the
faster we can likely solve the problems. You've prevented a variety of
complaints, we have to work on that.

thanks for the reply, tried that, but also had norton basic and the problem
was with an application that wouldn't run, with msg missing a file, but
nothing more specific than that, so now i have to try turning off auto
protect and if that doesn't work uninstalling it completely. norton talks
like there is some firewall but there is no functionality to provision it,
so its unclear just what its doing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, if Norton is involved, that's where you gotta start. And it depends upon
what Norton product you have, as to what problems you could be suffering from.
I'll give you two basic choices here, and you can negotiate from there.
1) Un install Norton.
2) Find out what Norton component is a problem, and configure it properly.

My choice would be #1. #2, though, should be doable. Norton doesn't sell a
totally worthless product. It can be used on a LAN with Windows Networking, if
you know how to set it up.

Let the Norton bashing begin anew.
