Only Outlook freeze on send/receive.

I had to remove Office Professional and reinstall it. Although the size of
..pst file is 1.78GB I also compacted. The same problem persists. I restart
Outlook after a long wait due ot premature closing and has to check itself
before it fully opens. Then the send/receive is cancelled to see if it works.
It will work for sometime before send/receive activates and it goes into "Not
Responding" state, checked the process, still says "Not Responding." I
reinstalled Office Professional and it just waits at downloading the 1st
message and doesn't continue further. It doesn't download even the 1st
message. Do I remove the .pst file and recreate one? Or should I do something
else? Kindly advice.

I have Office Professional 2003.
The problem has not been resolved so far.
