Only One PC Connected At Any Time To Internet

My home network consists of 4 PC's with one acting as the internet server.
The problem is that at any time any one of the PC's can connect to the
internet but if a second PC tries to log in to the ISP, it will receive the
message " Error 691 - Access was denied because username and/or password was
invalid on the domain".

My switch is a D-Link DES-1005D and is functioning satisfactorily on the DSL
connection to the ISP. The four PC's appear as normal in the workgroup
configuration and there is no problem in moving files from one PC to the
other through the network.

It sounds like you are connecting directly to the ISP and therefore can
only have one IP address. Either set up ICS or for a much easier
solution, replace the switch with a NAT router. This will provide
better security, all computers will be able to share the Internet
connection, and the so-called "server" machine will not need to be on
for other machines to get Internet connectivity.

Hi Malke

Thanks a lot for the advice and the links. I think you are correct in saying
that I am connecting directly to the net rather than using ICS. I'll read up
more on ICS and NAT router to find the best solution.

Regards.

Hi Al

Thanks for the info. If everythinmg else fails, then I'll probably write to
my ISP to confirm that they actually allow only a single connection. They
have a bad habit of not replying promptly.

Regards.

Malke was right, thank you Sir.

I found that the client PC's had not been configured for ICS although the
server was. I had also connected all the clients directly to the ISP via
dial-up.

Problem was solved by using Network Setup Wizard on each client.

I'm glad you got it sorted. Thanks for taking the time to let me know.

Terribly sorry for being so presumptious, Lady Malke. I'm sure many others
have benefited from your advice and I really can't thank you enough. Hope
you'll keep up the good work and be assured that your kind deeds will be
rewarded in ways that may not be so obvious.
