If he can't manually fix the problem, because you aren't there, and it
could be anything, he needs to run a complete Anti-Virus Scan of the
partition. If no viruses, or viruses are found, he needs reformat and
reinstall Windows XP Home after backing up the files and folders he wants to
save.
Or, he could try this. Change the BIOS Boot Order to Boot from the CD
first. Insert the Windows XP Home Editon CD in the CD Drive and restart the
computer. Press a Key to boot from the CD. After Setup finishes loading,
Press R for Repair.
Type 1 and hit Enter. For the Administrator Password: Leave Blank and Hit
Enter.
Type Help to see the list of Commands that can be used. Tell him to type
FIXBOOT C:
When done, type Exit. Change the Boot Order or leave alone.
Reboot the computer.
