Only 3GB of 4GB Ram visible in properties

We have a problem with a dell workstation with 4GB of RAM.
Bios detects correctly but windows only shows 3GB.
/3GB switch in Boot.ini is set.
Any ideas why windows only sees 3gb?

Weird,

I assume you have tried searching the KB.

If not, try having a look at graphic options, as I seem to remember
sometimes a graphics card will share Ram and you wont know about it..

Where do you see that? System info is notoriously unreliable, check in
Control Panel - System. front page. Also run MSConfig.exe, on Boot.ini
click Advanced and make sure that /MAXMEM is unchecked

The resoluiton was a bit surprising.
After checking the memory with a non MS tool it showed up that WinXP was
only using 2GB and not 3.
When I set /PAE /3GB in Boot.ini Windows correctly adressed 4GB and allowed
3GB for the application.

I have noticed on the Kingston memory site that the Dell 8400 BIOS addresses
4GB RAM but the system will only use 3GB; you said you have a "workstation"
without specifying a model # so this may or not apply ... certainly sounds
like a possibility
