Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 326851 reflects that:
"... You can also register the product ... online."
I wanted to register Windows XP product online after

Found in Help & Support:
Using online registration
With online registration, you can use your modem or an Internet connection
to register your copy of Windows XP. Registration ensures that you receive
product support, product update information, and other benefits. The process
takes only a few minutes to complete.

It is important to understand the difference between registering your copy
of Windows XP and activating it. Registration is optional and involves
submitting some personal information to Microsoft. Windows Product
Activation is part of Microsoft's effort to combat piracy and other
unauthorized uses of its products. Activation is required, does not involve
submitting any personal information (except the country you live in), and is
a quick and easy process. For more information, click Related Topics.

Open Registration Wizard.

Note:

To open Registration Wizard, click Start, and then click Run. In the Open
box, type regwiz /r.

Two things:

What you *have* to do is Activate it - within 30 days - unless this has
been done at installation (as it usually has been on a new machine,
bought with Windows included.

*Registration* of it is entirely voluntary - and mainly for the benefit
of marketing, though it does register the Product Identifier for the two
free 'support incidents'. I don't bother.

So first go to
Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Activate Windows
and if it does not say 'already activated' (and if the item is actually
present - it may not be with a preinstalled system), get on the net and
then take 'Actiivate on the internet now'. That will give you the
option of filling in and sending off registration at the same time.

If it is not there and you want to register, the other way is Start -
Run and run the line
C:\windows\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /R
