Online file storage

Does anyone know a free file storage
where files can be dowloaded or viewed by others as well?
I want to store some zip files, graphics and (short) avi movies I made
myself
which use too much bandwith on my website.
I'm currently using Yahoo's Briefcase
and although "This folder is shared with Everyone"
no one (except me) is able to see any of my files.
So this isn't much of a success.

If my request is slightly off topic my apologies.

But thanks in advance :)

When I looked into this a while back, these guys seemed OK --
http://free.prohosting.com/

Although they say "No Banners", I think you have to pay a one-off fee
to get that. I used some of the 50MB of "fully free" space for a
while, and that definitely came with advertising on it.

I shall take a look.

There are places like Ripway who offer this, but IMHO, the problem
with these free services is that although they offer some substantial
storage space, the bandwidth restrictions are very restrictive. For
eg., Ripway only allocates 10 MB daily.

Here you could send to yourself until 1 Gb,
and retrieve the letter when needed. I tried it with
small files, it works. With a lot of files, allways
compress before sending

regarding the Yahoo Briefcase problem make sure you have everyone's Yahoo ID
in the main folder as well as any sub folders you have... or you could make
it public and there anyone could get in... this would be ok as long as you
can trust your visitors to not share the address around... or you might like
to consider setting up ftp access with www.bravenet.com they only allow a
small amount of daily bandwidth too but if you allow members access via your
ftp login it could work
hope that helps

Thanks everyone for the replies,
perhaps more webspace is a better idea than file storage.
But I shall check out the links.
Yahoo Briefcase gives a lot of space,
but even if I give everyone full access
no one is able to see my files.
A friend of mine has the same problem.
I hope I find something better :)

Personally that's what I use Gmail for. I just created an account and send
the password to my friends. Just send emails to yourself in Gmail and
everyone can access the files. 1 Gb of space, with the restriction that the
emails can'n be more than 10 Mb in size.

Hi Rod,
does it also mean that they can use your Gmail account as they want, like if
they owned it? I'm wondering if doing that could be dangerous...

That's correct, they could even change the password. The system is based on
trust. In my situation I'm sharing an account with 4 other people, using
the account as a sort of database with files which are of interest to all
of us, accesable whenever we need those files. it works perfectly so far.
But you're right, it only takes one bad apple to screw things up.

On the bright side, someone seems to have found a method of tracking every
pc on the web:

Maybe this is a step forward in the fight against net-abuse.

I posted the Gmail suggestion erlier, so thank you for expanding on it and
explaining the idea.

Isn't this just another variation of the RFID/TCPA (aka TCG, TCP and
whatever name they're using today)?

The ony thing I read in the (dutch) article that pointed to this link is
that it's possible with this method to trace pc's behind NAT's and pc's
with variable ip-adresses.
Don't know if that was possible already, I'm not technical enough to
understand all of it.

Very clever. :) Thank you both. I think that would be a good way for
families and/or friends to share photos - better than emailing them
directly - better than YouSendIt as the files are available indefinitely.
