Online but get notice I'm "offline need to connect"

I recently just replaced my hard drive. Since then
frequently when navigating websites online I get a notice
that "Web page requested not available offline, to view
click connect" which just keeps repeating this message
when I do click on it and the Msn connect page keeps
coming up for me to put in my password. When this happens
I have to use MSN to navigate through websites in order
to avoid this problem. I use Roadrunner Internet Explorer
for my browser and only use an MSN Hotmail account so I
can use the instant messaging. I have Windows XP Home
Edition and not very familiar with settings. Never had
this problem before replacing hard drive. Is it just a
setting? Msn is wanting to take over. I have Internet
Exp. set as my default?? Could it be set wrong??
