one of the two networked PCs can't get to the shared files.

I have set up a network between XP home and Professional. While both PCs ping
properly each other I can't find a way to make XP Pro see the shared files of
XP Home. I have tried setting up a guest account but it didn't work. I even
created an account like the one i connect from XP Pro but no luck. Both PCs
connect directly via ethernet cards of the same brand and model. None of them
has SP2 on and XP Home is a greek version while Pro is U.S. English. They
belong to the same workgroup and the network was set up through the wizard.
XP Home connects to the internet properly through Pro but that is as far as
it goes. XP Pro acts as the server of course.
Some friends say that a network can't really work between XP Home and Pro
and they even said that MS is officialy deterring people from setting up such
networks.I simply hope that it's not true.

any suggestions?

WindowsXp home and Pro should see other in a Workgroup setting. But NOT in a
Domain.
As to your sharing problem, have you check your firewall Policies, either
Windows' or Norton?

Yiannis,

Firstly, it is absolutely poss bile to network XP Home and Pro. And AFAIK, it
should be possible to network two different languages.

This is actual XP Home, NOT XP Light that they're selling in Asia, right? XP
Light does NOT network.
<http://www.crn.com/sections/breakingnews/dailyarchives.jhtml?articleId=18826293&_requestid=205456>

When you activated Guest on the XP Pro computer, did you use Local User Manager
(Start - Run - "lusrmgr.msc")? Did you also activate Guest on the XP Home
computer?

Are you running both Client for Microsoft Networks, and File and Printer Sharing
for Microsoft Networks (Local Area Connection - Properties), on each computer?
Do you have shares setup on each?

Are you running NetBIOS Over TCP/IP (Local Area Connection - Properties - TCP/IP
- Properties - Advanced - WINS) on each computer?

Make sure the browser service is running on each computer. Control Panel -
Administrative Tools - Services. Verify that the Computer Browser service is
started.

Is the XP Pro computer running ICS? Make sure that ICF is not activated on the
Ethernet connection. And make sure ICF is NOT running on the XP Home computer.

Hi and thank you both.

I'm in Greece that is why XP Home version is Greek so no asian cut down
versions here
since Greece whether for good or bad was\is not under any circumstances a
part of Asia. :)

yup although unfortunately the problem is the Pro version can't connect to
home
and afaik Home doesn't have a LUM unless it's a hidden feature.as a matter
of fact
i just tried to use it on XP Home the feature is there but it's locked and
it "reminds"
me that i'm running Home and that LUM is not available for this version.

Are you running both Client for Microsoft Networks, and File and Printer Sharing
for Microsoft Networks (Local Area Connection - Properties), on each computer?

Yes they are running on each one and shares are set up properly.
XP by default share specific folders anyway when on LAN.

Are you running NetBIOS Over TCP/IP (Local Area Connection - Properties - TCP/IP
- Properties - Advanced - WINS) on each computer?

yes they are all running on default settings.
should I turn on DHCP settings perhaps since i'm on fixed IPs atm.
Make sure the browser service is running on each computer. Control Panel -
Administrative Tools - Services. Verify that the Computer Browser service is

CB service is up and running
Is the XP Pro computer running ICS? Make sure that ICF is not activated on the

XP Pro is running ICS. ICF is disabled as I run a different firewall
software which is shut down
when i'm not connected to the internet.
I got the same response when the firewall was off as when it was on.

btw I failed to denote the error i get, which is:

"\\Remote is not accessible.You might not have permission to use..blah blah.
Access is Denied"

Thank you

Yiannis,

What is this "different" firewall? Many third party firewalls are known for
interfering with file sharing, even when "shut down". You need to re enable,
then either un install, carefully following all un install procedures provided
by the vendor, or properly configure for file sharing only on your local LAN.

Also, what folder are you sharing on the XP Home computer? The "C:\Windows" and
"C:\Program Files" folders (and sub folders) are not shareable on XP Home; you
need administrative (full user) access, which is not available to Guest.

If no solution, do some diagnostic work.

Please provide ipconfig information for each computer.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in Notepad, copy and paste into your next post.
Identify operating system (by name and version) with each ipconfig listing.

The Microsoft Browstat program will show us what browsers you have in your
domain / workgroup, at any time.

You can download Browstat from:
<http://www.dynawell.com/reskit/microsoft/win2000/browstat.zip>
<http://rescomp.stanford.edu/staff/manual/rcc/tools/browstat.zip>

Browstat is very small (40K), needs no install, and runs from the command
prompt. Just drop it onto a couple workstations, and run it.

Browstat denotes domain although my network is not on a domain but a
workgroup.
At least that is what i set it up to be :)

any ideas? i see some potential problems based on the result but i don't
know how to fix those.. perhaps if there was a way to scrap the whole
connection and run the network wizard from scratch cause i think it has
messed up the configurations. but i can't delete those connections.

Yiannis,

Browstat always refers to your workgroup as a domain. For more information
about the browser subsystem (very intricate), see:
<http://support.microsoft.com/?id=188001>
<http://support.microsoft.com/?id=188305>
<http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winntas/deploy/prodspecs/ntbrowse.mspx>

Make sure the browser service is running on nikos. Control Panel -
Administrative Tools - Services. Verify that the Computer Browser service has a
Status of Started.

When you un installed Zone Alarm, did you follow these procedures:
<http://nh2.nohold.net/noHoldCust25/Prod_1/Articles55646/CompleteUninstallNonNT.html>

Yiannis, Zone Alarm has been involved in so many file sharing problems (even
when deleted OR disabled!). Some folks have reported success by:
1) Re install ZA.
2) Enable ZA.
3) Configure ZA for file sharing on the LAN, or
4) Un install ZA following procedures in the above link.

I recommend #3 over #4. You need protection.

Cheers,
Chuck
