That depends on whether there is a slave present or not. If not, then set
to Master. Sounds like a WD drive.

yes, it's a WD. so the dvd burner is a master, the dvd rom a slave, and the
HD a .....master or master with slave? Thanks.

It doesn't matter what devices are on the bus, disk, dvd burner, cdrom, etc.
If there are 2 devices on the same bus and one is a WD drive then the drive
would have to be jumpered as a Dual Master or Dual Slave. If the WD drive
is by itself then it would be jumpered as Single or Cable Select if you are
using the 80 conductor ide cable. In fact if both your ide cables are the
newer 80 conductor then set all devices to Cable Select. Master is on the
end of the cable, slave is in the middle.
