One Monitor - 2 computers?

This may be a little out of place, but I suspect I will get some info. from
you all. In updating from my old, old computer, to my most recent old
computer -- I am transferring files, using microsoft's free, direct cable
connection (DCC) and a cable between the PCs.

But I have only one monitor. It appeared I could ``hot swap'' the
cable to my monitor between the 2 PCs, to view each as needed. But
now my monitor is flickering, and showing signs of giving out. Perhaps
suddenly disconnecting and connecting the video in, is bad for the monitor
in the same way sudden power ons are hard on electronics?

Let me know, if so, and: Is there some way of starting DCC on one
computer without having a monitor attached? Is there freeware that
will safely turn off the video signal, before I disconnect the
monitor cable from one pc and attach it to another?

Thanks

If you need to view screens on both computers I suggest the simplest
answer is a switch box. In UK can be bought for approx £10.00.

Both PC cables for graphics would then go into the box rather than the
monitor and by simple flick of a switch you can view activities on
either computer.

DON'T! You can ruin both the monitor and your video card.

You could use VNC and control both PC's from one and the same
monitor, without any switching. (And without risk for your
hardware :-)

UltraVNC. Install Server on old PC and Viewer on new PC, then you can contrl
both PC's, transfer files etc:

I prefer using a KVM switch. I have an IO Gear 2 port (with cables) tha
was $20 US. Works very well. I was using VNC (and theoff shoots of it)
for a while, but I like the switch better.

A KMV Switch and cables is ultimately what you want.

2nd choice
VNC from http://www.realvnc.com

Hi!

I have (had) a Monitor Switcher. I am only using it anymore, when
servicing PC´s, it´s easier and I do not need to switch the VGA-Monitor
so often to my main PC. But my main PC (P3-S WS) is directly connected.
The crisp output of the Matrox is lost, with the 4x Switcher (KVM, and
it´s already a better quality one) :-(. (washed out, no pixels etc.)

Best Regards,

Daniel Mandic
