On shutdown Windows XP home edition restarts

When I installed Windows XP Home Edition everything was
working properly. I have been using it now for about a
week and just a couple of days ago when I selected the
computuer to shutdown it would go through the process of
shutting down and then the screen would go black and
restart. Can anybody out there help me to resolve this
issue?

a startup or norton cd-rom may help. worked for me when i
had shutting down problems. ws.
