On line status icon

I'm using Windows XP, Home edition, with IE and OE (but I don't think either
of them is the problem). Until last evening, whenever I logged on, I got an
icon in the System Tray, two computers merged. The two screens flashed as
information was uploaded or downloaded, and to end a session, a double
right-click brought up a dialog box. One choice was "Disconnect." For some
reason, when I logged on last night, the icon did not appear, and has been
missing in every session since.

Don't know what program puts it there, but I clicked on "Properties" in the
Connect window, and paged through the tabs. In one, I found reference to
showing an icon, but it's already checked. Any suggestions? Currently, the
only way I can disconnect is to pull the 'phone line out of the jack.

Go to Control Panel | Network Connections
Right click on the icon you use to connect to the internet and select
Properties.
In that window, near the bottom (if you use Dial-Up) you'll see :
"Show icon in notication area when connected"

If that doesn't work then create a new connection and use it instead

As I said, that option is already checked. How do I create a new connection?

Okay, I note the "Create new connection" option, now. Do I delete the
current one and simply select the "create" option? Will I have to enter
modem information?

Interestingly, the connection I use says it's "Disabled," which it obviously
is not, since I'm able to log on. Is that significant?

Yes, if you use the Wizard, you'll have to enter the phone number to connect
to, a name for the new connection,etc.

After it's made. you can right click on it and choose properties, and you'll
have access to various
settings that specific connection will use.

You should contact your isp to find out what the optimal settings are for
you to connect to them.

And yes keep the buggy connect icon, just in case..... Once your confidence
the new icon is
functioning as desired, you can delete it.

What do you suppose the "disabled" is all about? I only show two
connections, and both are shown as disabled. I'm not part of a network.

I'm curious as to the purpose of the "Remember" option on login. I always
choose "Remember my login and password," and always have to type both in when
logging on. Why ask, if it isn't going to remember them anyway? Just
curious.

I'm sorry, ive never used home networking and don't know what it referes to.

One i've never dealt with.

Do you know if this is the program that does the actual dialing? I ask
because if it is, doing as you suggest may clear another problem I'm having.
