On laptop Logitech mouse installer wants mouse on USB, not PS/2

Using a Dell Inspiron 7500 with a Logitec First Wheel mouse m/n:
M-S48a, I don't get the wheel to work. When the mouse was connected to
the PS/2 port, the Synaptics software announced it was disabling the
touchpad special features.

An attempt to install the latest driver from Logitech yields an
installer message stating it wishes to retain the special features of
the touchpad. To do so, it insists i connect the mouse via USB.

Is there a way to get the wheel to work without connecting the mouse
to the USB port? I'll gladly give up the touchpad special features.
