on closing Please wait while microsoft outlook exit hangs around

on closing Outlook i receive the message "Please wait while microsoft outlook
exits" which stays on screen, the only way to remove it is to ctrl - alt -
del and end task in task manager.

You may have something holding Outlook open. Are you running any
synchronization software (say for a Palm or other handheld), antispam,
antivirus, fax, etc.?
