On boot, "error loading operating system"

In Windows XP, on boot display goes to the black screen right after the first
display containing bios logo and info (American Megatrends), and the message
"error loading operating system" appears. I can make it to set up page, but
not sure if my problem is here or what parameter to address in set up. The
only change in the system recently was a change from dial-up to broadband
internet with no installation of any software

It usually indicates that there is no active partition or that the boot
sector of the active partition is damaged. Make sure that the boot
order in the BIOS (setup) is set so that the hard disk containing the
Windows installation is set to boot before other hard disks.

Does your computer have a floppy drive? Do you have a Windows XP CD?

Broadband requires a different modem. Assuming you have the new modem, it
also requires new drivers, which should have been installed at the time of
the new modem. Assuming that you also have the new drivers, then I'm not any
help.

What about the floppy diskette? With a Windows 98 boot diskette you can
boot the computer and use fdisk to verify the active status of the
partition.

You can boot with the Windows XP cd and start the Recovery Console then
issue the FIXBOOT command on the system partition, this will repair the
boot sector.
