On again off again problem

I'm running an IBM ThinkPad with XP to a Brother MFC 4600. At least once a
day the print job I send will produce pages with anywhere from 1 to about 50
symbols/numbers, usually in the top half of the page but generally random
places and symbols. I never know when it will happen and doesn't seem to be
related to the size of the job or the memory on my laptop. I reboot my
computer, shut down the printer and most of the time this solves the problem,
until the next time. I've run through the self help software with no luck.
Any ideas.
Thanks in advance,
Fred

"generally random places and symbols"
This usually indicates a communication related problem with the printer.
Have you checked the brother web site for updates and SP-2 information?
Similar symptoms occurred in the past with some printers, and were
associated with the parallel port mode. Most current model MFC's use the USB
port, or an ethernet port.
A quick read of the brother driver section leads me to believe that XP SP-2
introduced a bunch of new problems that have a plethora of suggested
remedies.

I have gone to the brother web site and dowloaded the latest version of the
software. I will see if this solves the problem though my thinkpad, which I
purchased in Sep/05 is said to have all of brothers latest. It was worth a
try, thanks Chuck. I will re-post if the problem persists. Thx again.
