Oleaut32.dll cannot start, suspected trojan involvement !

It all began when I was looking for a utility that can help me search
and delete duplicate files on my HD. I found a program called
"Duplicate File Killer" from AceZip.net ( www.acezip.net ) which is
available from:

http://www.acezip.net/dfk185.exe
or
http://azuk.net/acezip/dfk185.exe

and installed it.

After the installation, however, all hell broke loose.

First, I started to get that "The OLEAUT32.DLL file cannot start"
error. Then many programs just simply refuse to start. When I traced it
back to the "Duplicate File Killer" program, I found out that I can't
uninstall that file either ! !

When I use [My Computer ] > [ Control Panel ] > [ Add / Remove Programs
] to remove the "Duplicate File Killer" all I got is NOTHING. Yes, not
a thing !

Later I went online and searched for solutions. Amongst the solutions
available was the "McRepair.EXE" program available from
http://download.microsoft.com/download/msninvestor/patch/1.0/win98/en-us/mcrepair.exe

However, the McRepair doesn't help my situation either. The
"Oleaut32.dll file cannot start" problem is still playing havoc on my
computer.

When I tried to do the "regsvr32 oleaut32.dll" thing, I got the the
following error :

"LoadLibrary("oleaut32.dll") failed - A dynamic link library (DLL)
initialization routine failed"

In other words, I am stuck !

So please, HELP !!

Please tell me how to get rid of this problem without having to
reformat my HD.

I even tried to run several anti-spyware programs to get rid of this
problem, but all I got is that "Oleaut32.dll cannot start" thing.

HELP !!

Win98, WinME and alt.comp.virus ?

You are all overr the place onm this !

It sounds like you paid for screwing around you computer and it certainly isn't virus
related.

Refer to my previous message regarding oleaut32.dll ( @
http://problemwitholeaut32.notlong.com ) I need to point out yet
another thing ..

I tried updating the oleaut32.dll to a newer version, by using
Microsoft's VBRun60Sp6 service ( @ http://shorl.com/bivusavehidre ) but
this also failed.

I got the following error while updating VBRun6.0 -

" Error registering the OCX C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\OLEAUT32.DLL
"

Can anyone please tell me what other option is available for me, to get
rid of the "Oleaut32.dll file cannot start" problem" ?

Any suggestion will be most appreciated ! ! !

Thanks in advance ! ! ! ! !

Actually, I am using Win98SE. I post the message on these newsgroups
after a search on googlegroups for "oleaut32.dll" and these are the
newsgroups that come up the most !

Please do not flame me for crossposting. I crosspost this on
alt.comp.anti-virus because even anti-virus programs like Avast and
anti-spyware programs like Spybot just refuse to run after I installed
that "Duplicate File Killer" program.

And the main point is, I can't even UNINSTALL that "Duplicate File
Killer" program ! This point has made me _very_ suspicious of that
program.

If you have any suggestions on how to remove the "Duplicate File
Killer" program, and/or how to fix the "Oleaut32.dll file cannot start"
problem, and/or to enable my anti-virus, anti-spyware program to run on
my computer, without having to reformat my entire HD, I am all ears.

Thank you ! ! !

Google: register OLEAUT32.DLL

Then register it and see if that will fix your problem.

"regsvr32 oleaut32.dll" yielded me the following error message:

"LoadLibrary("oleaut32.dll") failed - A Dynamic link library (DLL)
initialization routine failed."

Although the above doesn't work as planned, thank you for your
suggestion !

Google the above error.

Or

You could have a bad version of a file, you might install
http://exuberant.ms11.net/98sesp.html
(UNOFFICIAL Windows98 Second Edition Service Pack)

Are you running ScanRegistry in your startup list? If so, restart in
MS/DOS, at the "C" prompt, type in scanreg /restore (noting the space
between the "g" and the "/"), hit enter, follow the directions to restore a
previous registry version. Hopefully you will have one that was recorded
prior to downloading the offending software. This has saved me several
times from the type of problem you have encountered.

In fact my machine does run on that unofficial win98 2nd ed. servpack.
What is happening now is that almost half of the program on my system
don't run, and almost ALL the anti-virus and anti-spyware programs on
my system refuse to even start !

And I have no way to disable the thing !!

Thanks a lot for your suggestions ! I'd google more and try to figure
out a way to do it, but I'll tell you, this has been a very frustrating
journey.

And what have we learned?
So far you have been spinning your wheels for 2 days. In that time you
could have installed your entire system twice. I think you should make
backups of all important files, address books, links, etc. and start over.
You were trying to clean up the mess you made of your drive anyway. It's
the weekend and by Monday you should have it running like brand new!
One more thing-get yourself a drive imaging program so you can restore
the system easily the next time.

NEVER download files from anywhere unless it is from the website of the
developer, manufacturer or some entity you trust. The developers
websites ALWAYS have the most up to date files that haven't been
tampered with by some third party who is "hosting"(read Leeching or
Stealing) those files without permission.

And that is probably the reason for your problem. The author of said
program obviously assumed that you are running a genuine Win98SE, not a
"tuned" one, adapted his program too tightly to the standard set of
files, and this was a bad (tm) combination of events.

Try the SFC trick. Pop your (hopefully legit) Win98 CD into the drive,
go start, run, enter SFC.EXE, say OK, and then enter the broken program
into the interface, and have the original version restored from the Win
install CD.

I don't know if the unofficial "servpack" will then be still
functional, though. But with the correct Oleaut32dll, your AV should be
working again, and maybe the software uninstall, too.

Once again, Bountiful, I suggest you try the MS/DOS scanreg /restore
capability. IF you have ScanRegistry active (as all Win98 users should,
IMHO) you may be able to restore a registry version that was working
properly before the installation of the guilty software. While it is true
that ScanReg /restore doesn't do the complete restore job of Windows ME or
XP, it does eliminate bad changes made to the registry. Considering your
problems, it's sure worth a try and from my experience is virtually risk
free as far as screwing things up even further.

Let me know if you haven't fixed the problem.
Post your email address, I will email you the VB6run update that can be
installed from the Command Prompt booting into DOS.

Also, go to the System folder, right click Oleaut32.dll and select
property.
Post size in bytes and version.

Unfortunately you are trying to get help at this newsgroup

If you are going to TRY to make such false accusations,
you should TRY to be a little more observant.

Then you just MIGHT notice the important details,
such as the fact that this message was posted to >

It appears you lack some yourself. Cross posting your initial comment
to all these different newsgroups (as Hugh rightly pointed out) wasn't
the most intelligent thing to do. All you have succeeded in doing is
insulting everyone in all these newsgroups!

And no, I'm not insulted...
