Old P2L97 memory question

Hi,

I have an old system with a ASUS P2L97 ref 2.05 board wich i wanna use for a
server purpose. I had one 64Mb non-ecc memory in it, and that worked fine.
But i want to install more memory in it. I have bought 2 256Mb ECC memory
modules, and installed them. But the system wont accept them.

I have flashed the memory to that latest 1010 version.

When i go into the BIOS, and look into the settings, i can not adjust the
ECC / NON-ECC settings. Does this board auto detect ECC and NON-ECC sticks ?

Or does this board not accept my memory modules ? Or do i need other
settings in the BIOS or on the board itself ?

Hope someone can help me out !

Thanks in advance, Bas.

I believe you can NOT use ECC memory with that motherboard. ECC is usually
used for specialized server motherboards and requires a special chipset.

I'm no expert on that board, but I think it should support ecc memory
just fine. It should autodetect the ecc feature (meaning if your ram
doesn't have ecc, you can't change the bios setting regarding ecc, if it
has ecc, you can change it).
What exactly do you mean with "system wont accept them"?
You also can't mix ecc and non-ecc modules (well you can mix them, but
ecc won't be available).

it will only accept maximum of 128 meg pre stick of ram and a total of 384.
it is also based on a 66 mhz front side bus. That means it may or may not
run on pc100. Some boards will some won't.

Thank you all for the anwsers. I was trying to put in 2 sticks of 256Mb ECC
Compaq memory, and the system kept een beeping that it could not see them.
Well, if you say that it can only support up to 128Mb of memory per bank,
the board was beeping correct.

I found some specs from a kingston site that tells me that this board
supports the followin. Does anyone know this is correct ? : 128MB 168PIN
DIMM SDRAM PC100 NON ECC CL2 NS

Thanks again ! Bas.

I'd assume the new modules aren't compatible with the chipset. You'd
need ones with 16 (or 18 for ECC, respectively) chips of 16Mx8 each -
these work fine, as demonstrated by my P2L97-DS. Have not tried
inserting more than the chipset's official max of 512 MB when using
SDRAM, though.

Yes. If you've got ECC modules in there (and by that I mean *only* ECC
modules) you can probably choose whether to turn the ECC function on or
off.
