old HDD in new PC

i recently bought a new pc. I removed the HDD from my old PC and installed it
in the new one. however i cant access the files in "my documents"on the old
HDD because the files were protected. The instance of windows XP on the old
HDD is so messed up that i cant even start it. the system doesnt promt me for
a password or anything. I am logged in as system administrator. how can i get
around this.

You may need to take ownership of the folder and files. See here

If you disconnect the new drive and connect the old hard drive to the
primary controller and set the jumper to master you should be able to do a
Repair Install that might fix the old drive. See How To Run a Repair Install
