Ol2003 hangs on sending

Suddenly, sending mail with attachments hangs. OL statusbar says
preparing send/receive, but never completes. A new icon shows up in my
system tray that says "Microsoft Office Outlook is Synchronizing
Folders" as well; I don't know what that is and haven't seen it before
this weekend.

I can cancel the send/receive, but any attempt to send anything else
fails at this point as well. I have to close OL and reboot my PC.
Upon restart, sending w/o attachments will then work fine, until I try
another attachment which starts the whole process over again.
Attachment size seems to have no bearing.

I have tried deleting my profile and creating a new one, but this has
no effect.
I do not use offline .ost files and a search of my system confirms none
exist.
I do not use autoarchive and a search of my system also confirms no
other .pst files exist.
I removed a recent hotfix: Update for Outlook 2003 Junk Email Filter
(KB916521) installed on 5/11/2006, but that didn't change anything.
I did a system restore to before 5/11/2006 when I last successfully
sent a message with an attachment, but that didn't help eitiher.
Lastly I uninstalled and then reinstalled Office 2003, and tested
without any updates - no luck. I then installed SP2 - still no luck.

Any other ideas?? I am totally stumped, not to mention a little
crippled.

My sys info:
Dell e1705 laptop
XP pro SP2
80 gig free HD space
1 gig ram
Using a pop server, not exchange

Thanks!

Hello. I don't know if this is the same problem I had with getting the update
to install, but I found the following on this link:
http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?t=19576&;

"Found an instance similar to mine: i.e. had used Windows Live Registry
Cleaner before downloading the Kb916521 update.

Advice from Robin Walker [MVP] was to find the backup done by the
aforementiond programme at:
"Documents and Settings|<user>\ApplicationData\Windows Live Safety
Centre\Backup. I then double clicked the .reg file, closed everything down,
manually downloaded and installed the update.

Now everything's back to normal, and update is succefully installed. "

I tried this and it also solved my problem. If you have used Windows Live
Safety Center to clean your registry, that could be your problem, too. Best
of luck.

when sending emails but is fine receiving. I do not work offline and am on a
standalone pc. it started yesterday when the 'MS office is synchronising
folders' message appeared suddenly, and had never been there before.
I have not run any updates to my knowledge!
