OL2002 not creating .NK2 file

I'm having a problem with OL2002 creating the name cache
file. I've search the entire computer and the .nk2
or .nick file is nowhere to be found. I'm running the
enterprise verison of OL2002 on a system running MS
Windows XP Home edition. I've tried detect and repair as
well as completely reinstalling the software. Does anyone
know if there is a registry key that is created?

Windows XP hides most Outlook files, so make sure you search in hidden
and system files and folders.

I did ensure that it was showing hidden files while doing
my search. I was able to find the files on 3 other network
computers.

I just reread your original post and I'm a bit confused -- you just say
"I'm having a problem with OL2002 creating the name cache file", but you
don't say what the problem IS, exactly. You do know that Outlook 2002
only creates the file when an e-mail address is typed into a new mail
message, right -- you know that the AutoComplete function in Outlook is
not tied to the Contacts folder?

Yes. The problem that I'm having is that if I have outlook
open, after sending a few messages, it will remember the
email address that I already typed. However, as soon as I
close outlook and then reopen it. It no longer remembers
the previous addresses. (I used the term AutoComplete
incorrectly, I meant Suggest Names while typing email
addresses. Sorry!)

Is it possible for you to suggest an idea for my other
post (receiving and sending email twice every time a
send/receive is done, whether automatically or manually)

Thanks in Advance

As far as I know, "Suggest names..." is the same as AutoComplete, at
least in Outlook 2002. I don't know why you wouldn't have an .NK2 file.
If I find an answer for you on this, I'll post back.

Hi Jocelyn:
I also have a post on the newsgroup regarding the .NK2
file not being created so if you find anything I would
appreciate your response too.

no NK2 FIle

I am wondering if there was ever a solution to this thread. I am having the same issue with 2003. The files are NOT there. Instead, I am still seeing .NICK files, which should not be there.

This is not a case of hidden files, or not searching hidden files and subfolders, the files simply are not there. So, the behaviour is as this gentleman stated...While outlook is open, auto complete will work for those addresses resolved during that one session, but once outlook exits, the cache is cleared.

Any information would be very helpful.

I found the solution to this issue. Do a search on *.NICK, and delete all entries. This will force outlook to recreate the cache file, and it will be the *.NK2 format.

This did resolve my issue, which was the exact same as your original posting.
