OL 2007: Out of memory or system resources...

After installing The 2007 Microsoft Office Suite SP2 on one of my machines
I'm now greeted with the "out of memory..." dialog that renders OL
non-functional.

I ran Office Diagnostics & everything checked out fine.

I then ran the OL repair tool, & it located a handful of minor problems that
were corrected, but the problem still persisted.

After doing a bit of Web research my issue pointed towards a registry issue.
I cleaned the registry (after making te appropriate backups!) with 2
different cleaners. I also used Regedit per one forum user's suggestion to
individually rename each Office 2007 Patches entry to "Patches.old." None of
these worked.

I'm using the same .pst file on my laptop with no problems and with SP2
supposedly (it shows as successfuly installed in WU update history but is not
listed in WU installed updates) installed!

Ideas? Thanks!

The issue is encountered at startup on the affected PC Roady. OL starts fine.
It's only after attempting the Send/Receive operation that I receive the 'out
of memory' error dialog box.

OL did start correctly using SM. I then ran Office Diagnostics again per the
steps listed in the link you provided. Once again, no problems were noted. My
next step will be to run the Repair operation via A/R P via CP. If OL still
fails to operate nominally I'll then reinstall SP2. Stay tuned... --Randy

I ran the Repair operation & it completed successfully. OL, however, stopped
again after completing the S/R function. One piece of info I left out of the
original post was the complete message in the 'out of memory dialog box; it
follows. I'm now going to restart & try OL again. If it still fails I'll then
reinstall SP2, restart, then try again. If OL is still not operating properly
I'll have to do a complete reinstall of Office 2007.

Complete error dialog message:
"Microsoft Office Outlook - Cannot start processing services. There is not
enough free memory to run this program. Quit one or more programs, and then
try again."

I reinstalled SP2, restarted, started OL & am still encountering the same
issue. Unless you or others have other ideas about resetting specific
registry settings it looks like I'm faced with doing a complete 'clean'
install of Office 2007 on the affected machine. All other apps function
nominally. I might add that my OS is the dreaded Vista!

You issue is a configuration/settings issue so a reinstall will not help you
there and Windows Vista isn't the cause of it either ;-)

As the error occurs at send/receive time it is very likely that it is caused
by something that is initiated at that time. This could be the reading of
your send/receive settings or your virus scanner interfering with Outlook.
Both are quite easy to troubleshoot;
-Rename your srs-file to .old to reset the send/receive settings of Outlook.
This will not delete any account configuration.

Thanks for all of your help so far Robert!

Oh well, I guess I was trying to make the issue more global in its effect
rather than being a truly OL-specific one.

I renamed the srs-file to .old to reset the send/receive settings of Outlook
& this did not correct the issue.

I then reviewed my firewall (COMODO Internet Security) & antivirus (Avira
AntiVir Personal) & neither were directly or indirectly "integrated" with OL.
I did, however, go ahead & denoted the .pst file that has the issue as "safe"
anyway. I also checked my OL Add-ins & neither the firewall or antivirus
software were listed. After doing this I restarted OL & still encountered the
same issue.

Any new ideas? :)

PS: This is a totally unrelated question but would know why I'm not
receiving notifications of replies even though I check the box? They're not
going to Junk Mail or being blocked at the ISP server level.

Have you opened Outlook in safe mode?

Start > Run > outlook.exe /safe

Does the behaviour continue then?

In that case there is something integrating with Outlook that is causing the
problem. Look at your Add Ins. Remove them all. Add them back one at a time
until you find the culprit.

That's the one troubleshooting step I forgot to perform! BINGO, I found the
culprit add-in. It was Business Contact Manager for Outlook. The BCM update
is the only 2007 SP2 component that failed to install! I copied the details
below. I've seen reports on the Web with many users encountering this failure
but I haven't found an MS solution yet. Thanks!

Well, through more research I was able to find a fix in order to successfully
install the SP2 update for BCM. In doing so it automatically reloaded as an
add-in in OL. You guessed it...OL again has the out of memory issue! This is
ridiculous... Thanks for your help though.

PS: This is a totally unrelated question but would know why I'm not
receiving notifications of replies even though I check the box? They're not
going to Junk Mail or being blocked at the ISP server level.

Are you asking about read receipts? Most people unless they're using Outlook
2000 or older can deny read receipts and many servers don't allow them.
Often they get stuck in the recipient's Outbox.

OR

Are you asking about the incoming email receipt notification? You don't get
notified when a new email comes in?

I was assuming you had already checked your addins after my first reply in
the troubleshooting steps indicated but good to hear you solved it now
still.

BCM is a whole other beast to deal with and has its own support newsgroup
down the hall. Are you actually using BCM or did it just ship with the
machine? Just asking because a lot of people have it installed while they
don't use it.

As for your PS. Do you mean the email notifications from the forum you are
posting too? It looks like you are using the official Microsoft web based
newsgroups. Have you verified that your profile holds a valid email address?
The posting address itself can be spoofed of course. Also, on occasion the
web based newsgroup just acts up. Personally I use Windows Live Mail to
access these newsgroups which gives me a better overview (but then again; I
post a lot :-D).

Just as feedback from another (non-technical) user, which I already posted
under a different thread on the same subject:

I ended up removing BCM altogether as an Add-In, after which Outlook 2007 on
its own has been working fine without the insufficient memory crap.

Fortunately I was basically using BCM only as an address book as I wasn't
needing all the other BCM features in my business. Thus, I transferred all my
contacts from the BCM contacts database into the regular Outlook contacts
database (using Export/Import).

The only real loss for me is that I had set up some companies and
organizations I deal with regularly as "Accounts" in BCM, which would no
longer be available.

Bottom line: If you don't really need BCM, get rid of it (at least until
Microsoft comes up with a solution to the problems caused by the "update,"
which I gather it has not).

Hi I'm getting the same problem but I'm running BCM Outlook 2007 on a Vista
64 Sun Ultra 40 M2 workstation with 20Gb RAM, 2.5TB disc (1.5Tb free) and all
completely up to date on service packs. Problem continues even when Outlook
is the only task running.

Seems there must be one of 3 answers to this:

1. Outlook 2007 with BCM needs more than 20Gb of RAM and more than 1.5Tb of
disk to run. Do I need to upgrade to a power machine? - Can't wait for the
next Outlook release!!!!

2. There is some setting that needs changing - SQLServer management studio
express is reporting it can access all memory so anyone got a suggestion as
to where I should look next?

3. There's an Outlook / BCM bug which MS haven't publically acknowledged -
perhaps MS applications can't run under Vista 64? There are a few postings on
the web reporting this issue but I've not found any solution yet.

I've tried all the standard diagnostics but the problem definately seems
somehow linked to BCM and the size of the .PST file - BCM won't install on
this machine with a .PST file over about 1.7Gb.

BCM works fine until I try and open any archived .PST file then it reports
insufficient memory and won't even permit the closing of the .PST file.

This does not look like a big deal to fix as the problem is fairly easy to
replicate - perhaps there is a 32bit address space that the MS guys haven't
updated. Can anyone help apart from suggesting I try to find a contact manage
that runs under Solaris?
