OL 2003 reports that Outlook.pst is not a personal folder file HEL

G

Guest

I am running Xp Pro with SP-2 with all updates applied and Office 2003 Pro
with all updates applied.
I installed a new hard drive and prior to the upgrade I copied all of my
favorites, documents, and outlook pst files to another hard drive for safety.
I installed the new hard drive, XP, and OFC 2003. I ran Outlook 2003 set it
all up and was able to send and receive e-mail. however, I am unable to
import my old mail and contacts or even open the pst files as data files or
run scanpst on them.
I always receive the same error"The file C:\Doc...and
Sett...\Jim\Local...\App.....\Microso....\Outl...\outlook1.pst is not a
personal folders file."

I have been browsing the web and lookng for answers but I have not been
successfully. I searched the MS KB and did not see anything similar. Please
help

Then you need to specify the steps you used to copy and transfer these
files. We have no idea of how you corrupted them. Importing and Exporting is
almost always a mistake.

Russ,
Thanks for the reply.

I shutdown all applications and then copied all the folders, My Documents,
Favorites, and Outlook to the other disk. It is very odd though, I have done
this several times beofre with OL98 uip to and including 2003 and have never
had this issue.
Managing several Windows 2000/3 and Exchange Servers it seems odd that
this wuld be an issue now as I have never experienced this problem before. I
have several PST and they run from about 75k up to and including 150MB. I
try to keep my PST files below 250MB. I also have a laptop with W2K and OL2K
and have moved PSTs several times and never suffered this problem.
Any solutions?

Again thanks for the help.

That method should be fine.
Have you tried to repair the file with the Inbox Repair Tool?

Russ,
Yes I did and I get the same error "The file C:\Doc...and
Sett...\Jim\Local...\App.....\Microso....\Outl...\outlook1.pst is not a
personal folders file."
Really odd problem in my mind because it almost seems like after a few
patches had been applied that OL2K3 stopped importing pst files. A few weeks
ago I did this with no issues for another user. Now it is my pst files and I
can not open them and the only thing that comes to mind that changed over the
last month is a couple of patches for XP and OFC.
Might this have caused a problem?

Thanks again

I doubt the patches are in play.
You keep mentioning importing. If you were in the habit of exporting and
importing your PST files as a way to transfer them or back them up, that
is a far more likely cause for file corruption.
The only safe way to transfer or backup PST files is to close Outlook
completely (making sure it is completely closed in Task Manager) and
then using Windows Explorer to copy them.

Russ,
Sorry for the confusion. What you described is exactly what I did and
always do. I shut down OL2K3 or any version for that matter and then copy
using explorer to the destination.
It just seems odd the file are names outlook.pst, security.pst,
personal.pst, and other names but always with a pst. If I select one file
that then do an open with it does not offer OL2K3 as an option and if I
manually browse and select outlook.exe, outlook opens an e-mail and makes the
file an attachment on the e-mail every time.
The samllest file I have is about 59MB other wise I would try to send one
in for you all to look at.

Russ,
The method you describe is how I first tried to add the PST files to
OL2K3. Once I received the mentioned error I tried to import and then I
tried scanpst and again I received the same error.
I looked through the KB for over a week off and on and still found no
solutions so I came to the forum here hoping to find some solutions. There
are several years of data in those files and I need to recover as much as
possible. To make matters I will be adding a PowerBook G4 to my PC so now I
will need to sync between OL2K3 and Entourage which mean more fun.
First things first I ned to open the pst files in OL2K3, back them up, and
then open them again to make sure. I will have the sync issue later.

Again, not knowing how the file was corrupted makes it impossible to provide
a solution.
I would assume you back up your data.
Repair options are limited once a PST file is corrupted.
If alternating a scandisk utility with the Inbox Repair Tool fails to repair
the PST file, you can use the following tool to find out what can be fixed:

Try this workaround. Go to your present pst files where located. Move those files out of that folder to a safe place. Then copy the saved pst files not the folder but only the files in to where you removed the pst files from the working folder. Of course all this with OL closed. Reboot after inserting the saved pst files and open OL. Should work. Let us know

possible. To make matters I will be adding a PowerBook G4 to my PC so now I
will need to sync between OL2K3 and Entourage which mean more fun.
First things first I ned to open the pst files in OL2K3, back them up, and
then open them again to make sure. I will have the sync issue later.

That's because you never open PST files from Windows Explorer.
You only open them from Outlook.

Russ,
Sorry for the confusion. What you described is exactly what I did and
always do. I shut down OL2K3 or any version for that matter and then copy
using explorer to the destination.
It just seems odd the file are names outlook.pst, security.pst,
personal.pst, and other names but always with a pst. If I select one file
that then do an open with it does not offer OL2K3 as an option and if I
manually browse and select outlook.exe, outlook opens an e-mail and makes
the
file an attachment on the e-mail every time.
The samllest file I have is about 59MB other wise I would try to send one
in for you all to look at.

Russ,
Yes I did and I get the same error "The file C:\Doc...and
Sett...\Jim\Local...\App.....\Microso....\Outl...\outlook1.pst is not a
personal folders file."
Really odd problem in my mind because it almost seems like after a
few
patches had been applied that OL2K3 stopped importing pst files. A few
weeks
ago I did this with no issues for another user. Now it is my pst files
and I
can not open them and the only thing that comes to mind that changed
over the
last month is a couple of patches for XP and OFC.
Might this have caused a problem?

Thanks again

That method should be fine.
Have you tried to repair the file with the Inbox Repair Tool?

Russ,
Thanks for the reply.

I shutdown all applications and then copied all the folders, My
Documents,
Favorites, and Outlook to the other disk. It is very odd though, I
have
done
this several times beofre with OL98 uip to and including 2003 and have
never
had this issue.
Managing several Windows 2000/3 and Exchange Servers it seems odd
that
this wuld be an issue now as I have never experienced this problem
before.
I
have several PST and they run from about 75k up to and including
150MB. I
try to keep my PST files below 250MB. I also have a laptop with W2K
and
OL2K
and have moved PSTs several times and never suffered this problem.
Any solutions?

Again thanks for the help.

Then you need to specify the steps you used to copy and transfer
these
files. We have no idea of how you corrupted them. Importing and
Exporting
is
almost always a mistake.

I am running Xp Pro with SP-2 with all updates applied and Office
2003

with all updates applied.
I installed a new hard drive and prior to the upgrade I copied all
of
my
favorites, documents, and outlook pst files to another hard drive
for
safety.
I installed the new hard drive, XP, and OFC 2003. I ran Outlook

set
it
all up and was able to send and receive e-mail. however, I am unable
to
import my old mail and contacts or even open the pst files as data
files
or
run scanpst on them.
I always receive the same error"The file C:\Doc...and

I have been browsing the web and lookng for answers but I have not
been

Russ,
Where is the inbox repair tool? My computer froze up last night while we
had the "Rules" screen up in outlook. When I restarted, outlook wouldn't
recognize the Personal Data File that I had been using just fine.
Thanks,
Elizabeth

Search for "scanpst.exe" on your hard drive.

Thanks Russ and Brian. I was able to find the tool... too bad it didn't fix
the problem. I will check out that other website you mentioned.

Thanks again!
