ok to delete folder servicepackfiles ?

Bill

c:\windows\servicepackfiles\i386 is 256mb. I'm guessing it's something from
sp1. I do not have sp2 installed. Can I delete this folder safely ?

Good answer - will the folder's contents still function properly in the
compressed state?
do I ever need to un-compress it?
if so how?

TIA,

Brilliant question, brilliant answer, brilliant link...

Yes. This is not like a 'zipped' form of compression; it's a type of
compression native to NTFS5.

I did - found out I can re-skin Ad-Aware - life is good in blue, grey,
yellow, or default land

Thanks again<G>

No. It contains the service pack file versions for use in preference to
ones from the original CD if needed by File Protection/SFC/New Hardware
etc. On an NTFS drive a useful amount of space can be saved by
compressing it. What you can do if you have a CD burner is burn the
complete servicepackfiles folder to a CD, then run regedit.exe and at

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup

Change the value of ServicePackSourcePath in the right pane to reflect
the drive. Best if you have 2 drives, and can have the original
SourcePath on one and this on the other
