Just got back after a five day trip, started up and first thing ran MS
update (XP/SP3). The download was going so slowly (fast cable
connection) that I decided to cancel during download 4 and restart the
computer. Windows shutdown hung. This was around 5-6pm Thurs MT.
Restarted, problem even worse. MSE update couldn't connect, though SAS
and Avira had. System Restore wouldn't even run. After another
restart and a long wait, message that serious Windows errors (2) had
occurred and were fixed. After that, another restart and everything
went ok, including MSE update.

I guess we have to wait till the "hackers" figure out how to crack windows 7
before we really start seeing security updates for it

I have a minor curiosity. As usual, I didn't install all the updates at one
go, but in small batches, with a reboot after each. After installing
KB970430 and KB 971737, I've found that every time I boot my computer I get
4 'LoadPerf' instances in Event Viewer under 'Applications' - 2 of them are
event 1001 enties, for removing performance counters for the WmiApRpl
service, and the other 2 are event 1000 entries for loading them. These are
not shown as 'errors or warnings - just as information. Googling doesn't
tell me anything useful, and in any case I know these entries are a
consequence of those two specific updates, 970430, and 971737.

So I intend simply to ignore this, unless anyone suggests I shouldn't?

Season's greetings, all.
