Ok, so I'm a lazy moron - Explorer crashes at startup

S

Steve Nielsen

Actually I am way too overworked. Besides I'm not sure the best way to
research this particular error.

I have in front of me an Acer tablet PC (Jeez, I hate these kinds of
things! Laptops are bad enough!) running XP Pro Tablet PC Editon, SP1,
critical updates in place. Has been scanned for viruses (that's virii
for you non-Scrabble players) and other malware using Spybot S&D 1.3 and
Ad-aware 6.181. Disk error check shows no errors. Msconfig looks ok -
nothing obvioulsy terrible loading.

Right after login and about halfway through icons loading into the
Notification Area, Explorer crashes with this error and then restarts:

Explorer.exe aplication error
The instruction at "0x734301d5" referenced memory at "0x734301d5"
The memory could not be "read"
Click Ok to terminate the program
Click cancel to debug the program

Clicking Cancel does apparently nothing, unless there a dump file
created somewhere and it's not telling me.

Event viewer shows a very un-informative
"The shell stopped unexpectedly and Explorer.exe was restarted."
Well, duh - I can SEE that!

Visiting the Help and Support Center is just as un-informative and adds
"No user action is required."
Gee, that was useful.

It has also done it after the initial crash when right clicking on My
Computer.

This condition is apparently also preventing hyperlinks to local files
in a webpage created with Publisher from working.

I also had it run a memory test overnight and half the day with no errors.

Any ideas where to start researching/looking?

Thanks folks,
Steve

Ok Michael, didn't realize there was a tablet PC group, will do if
Kelly's tips don't help.

Thanks,

Well OK, but the "apostrophe s" makes it possessive, not
plural . . . if you want plural (or even double-plural)
there's no apostrophe needed.

English isn't Windows, it's more like Rocket Science !

You're welcome, Steve.

Kelly's tips may well resolve the issue.

I made the recommendation because the version of XP on Tablet PC is somewhat
different than desktop versions and the Tablet PC itself has issues unique
to it and in terms of providing you with the proper help tools, they would
be better able to point you in the right direction.

Actually I am way too overworked.

Poor baby! That's OK, we are, too, but we'll help /you/! <eg>

1. Posting to news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.tabletpc would be
a better idea.

2. Check your system for "hijackware":

Help with Hijackware
http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm
http://aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/Darnit.htm

CoolWebSearch Chronicles
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/cwschronicles.html

Run these tools in the following order with nothing else running in
background:

1. CWShredder (fix all found)

2. Ad-Aware (fix all found)

3. Spybot (RTFM but generally fix everything in red)

Important: You *must* seek updates for Ad-Aware, Spybot, etc., before each
and every use, even "right out of the box". But even they can't catch
everything, 24/7. When all else fails, HijackThis
(http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/HijackThis.exe) is the preferred
tool to use. It will help you to both identify and remove any
hijackware/spyware. **Post your files to http://forums.spywareinfo.com/ or
http://forum.aumha.org/viewforum.php?f=30 for expert analysis, not here.**

[Alternate download pages for many of the above tools may be found at
http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm.]

Also update your virus definitions and then run a full system scan. From
now on, do both daily.

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?

Yes, it was rather shocking, wasn't it! Anything for a laugh. And Steve
deserves a good one, for the laugh he gave me with his subject for this
thread.

To Steve - Sorry I couldn't help you, dude, but your subject made my day,
and really helped me! Thank You! :)
