Hi guys

Im a computer wiz, a computer technitian hehehe im also 16!!!

I just know alot about the trade and am studying SDD, IT and IPT in
year 12 this year.

BUT however

My windows task manager has decided to disappear...

This has happened before but I dont wish to reinstall Xp home again and
go through all that rigmaroll again right before I have an exam that is
due!!

Is there any other way to fix this problem, rather than reinstalling Xp
home??

Please help me

Thanks, Annie

Hi Anza,

Click start/run, type taskmgr.exe and click ok - does it appear? If not,
then I would suggest you began scanning the system for malware, as this is a
typical sign of an infection. Here are some programs that can help:

Free virus removal tools:

http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/
http://www.emsisoft.com/en/
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/8/lng/us/tpl/v5/nid/3001#3001
http://www.f-secure.com/download-purchase/tools.shtml

Also, you may use this free on-line scanner:
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

Symantec also distributes many free removal tools that are virus-specific:
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/tools.list.html

Many are best run in Safe mode to minimize interference. Most will resist
removal in normal mode where they are active.

How to start in Safe mode:

Rick's advice is good and I would definitely make sure you have jumped
through all the security hoops and have a clean machine.

One other possibility is that you have just turned it off somehow. There was
an item by Dr. Bombay in Thursday's (4/6/06) Fort Worth Star Telegram that
dealt with this issue. I did not keep it, but you might be able to Google for
it. He gave specific advice about how to go in and turn it back on.

Good luck!

Definitely indicative of winmalware. I would do a wincheck. I would also
review good winpractices vis a vis winsurfing, winopening email attachments
and winsharing winfiles etc. Internet Explorer's "install on demand" etc.
can be turned off and the Internet Explorer Internet Zone's winsecurity
level could be raised a bit.

Your Windows XP winstallation should be at SP2 level BEFORE attaching ot the
Internet for the first time .. and then your first web winvisit should be to
Windows Update where you winstall the rest of the winpatches.

thanks guys for all your help

I tried running taskmgr.exe and it says : "Another program is currently
using this file"!!!!

So I shall try all the anti-spywares and things.

I think I will then just use the Repair installation on the windows xp
cd
thanks again

After you're done, run sfc /scannow to repair the damage. Actually
this can help get you some funtionality back to let you START.

There should be no reason to do a repair installation, removing the malware
should resolve the issue.
