Internet Explorer (and Outlook Express) are programmes that can be run
in an Offline and on Online state. Thus you can connect to the internet
and download a current copy of a web page, go offline i.e. disconnect
from the internet and continue to read the web page. You can store or
retain copies of web pages to read offline on your computer but users do
not normally do not do this. It uses up disk space and is unnecessary as
you can create a Favourite ,which is a link to the web site, if you know
you will want to read it again.
Internet Explorer can be configured to display a menu bar. On the menu
bar if you select File you will find Work Offline. If there is a tick
before Work Offline you are Offline. Click on Work Offline and the tick
is removed and you are Online. Click again and you return to the Offline
status.
Since the introduction of Internet Explorer a number of Toolbars have
been developed, notably by Google and Yahoo, which mask some of the
basic features of Internet Explorer and simple things like menu bars are
often not displayed. However, you should be able to find some way to
easily switch between Offline and Online modes. It is just a matter of
studying the buttons in the window you see when you start Internet
Explorer. It may not always be obvious you have started Internet
Explorer. Many Search functions automatically connect to the internet
through Internet Explorer or an alternative browser. If you are Offline
you will get an error so you need to know how to change the status to
Online.
