Office97 in Win2000 Pro startup

When I open the first Excel file, I get the message that
it is 'already open'. Subsequent files open w/out the
message. This happened in WORD also, until I installed the
SR-1 & SR-2 patches. WORD in now OK, but problem persists
w/Excel. PowerPoint will refuse to open at times,
requiring a re-boot, especially when I create a shortcut &
drag it to the desktop. I also have all the Windows
updates. Should I remove & re-install Office97?
