merge handler error in briefcase

Briefcase will not update my excel 97 files. I get a "merge handler" error.
Acticle 174658 says that updating Office97 with service release 2 will solve
the problem. I have Office SR-2 installed but still have the problem.
I'm running Win XP Pro(with SP2), Office 97(with Office SR-2) but Word has
been updated to Word2000.
Please help.

Hi Ramesh, thanks for the reply. I checked the links you suggested but could
not find an appropriate solution. Article 174658 does not apply to my
situation since I already have Office SR-2 installed.
Do you recommend:
1) deleting the registry key as described in Article 174658: Method 2: Use
If SR-1 Patch Is Installed
or
2) delete Office 97 and reinstall Office with SR1 and Sr2
or
3) other suggestions
My concerns with 1) or 2) is they may interfer with Word 2000.

I'd try this in Office / Excel newsgroups.

Yes, I was thinking of that one, but no chance for me to test the solution
here, as I don't have that version of Office installed. Any case, take a
backup of that branch (to a .REG file) so that you can restore the setting
later if needed.
