Office XP

Yes, but make sure you have the latest service pack (SP3) installed.

Office XP Outlook will not remember your password in Vista, so you'll have
to enter it every time you close Outlook or reboot. Nagging little things
are sometimes the worst to put up with.

Could you define the process in a little more detail? I'm not upgrading - I
bought a new machine.

I have the Office 2003 CD and want to install it on my new Vista machine.
Since it came in the box, it doesn't have any Service Packs installed in it.
How do I install it? How do I get the license transfered to my new system?
I'll be shooting my old computer.

TIA,
jim

For some reason, I'm unable to find the button on the main page for entering
a new post, so I'm hoping someone will see my question here and reply.

I'm running Office XP (Service Pack 3), plus I have Open Office 2 installed
on Vista Home Premium. For a while, I had no problems using either of these
suites.

Issue: I'm getting crashes when I use the Open command from inside Word or
OO Writer. It works fine as long as I don't change folders, but if I try to
change folders, it instantly goes down. I also use Mail Merge for a
newsletter frequently, and the same thing happens whenever I change folders
while attempting to import a list of addresses.

If I open a file from the default folder or from the list of recent files,
it doesn't crash. I can go into Windows Explorer, locate the file I want, and
double click to open it. Obviously, this isn't ideal.

This is an issue that has developed, as it didn't do this when I first
installed Office XP. I have tried re-installing Office XP, and I've tried
re-installing Vista. Neither corrected the problem. The Vista re-install
didn't wipe out the old files, but I was hoping to stop short of doing an
entirely fresh install of the operating system when I have no idea if that
will fix the problem in the long run.

Any suggestions?

Hi Andrew

Nothing to apologize for on my behalf but thanks anyway.

After reading the OP's previous post just below 6/30/2007 at 7:54 PM and this one it is the same issue that he is talking about but he threw Open Office into this one along with Office XP.
His issue seems to stem from whenever he uses the Open command and attempts to change folders. He is getting crashes in Word and Open Office .
If it was a Vista issue he would be getting an error message as opposed to a crash.
This is an Office issue be it XP\OO.

I would very much like to see this crash error and what it say's in the Event Viewer\Application.

Does it register there or in the Event Viewer\System . It will then be obvious as to where the fault lies.Application or System

It is the XP Office\Open Office application and it's environment

Thanks Andrew

Um...I did post the question twice in an attempt to get it in a spot it
could be addressed, but I clearly indicated Open Office had the same problem
in both posts. I didn't "throw in" Open Office when I rephrased the question
at all.

Here's one:

Here's the other:
I'm running Vista Home Premium on a Dell E520 system.

I'm getting program crashes in Word (Office XP Professional - Service Pack
3) and Open Office Writer 2 whenever I use the Open command and attempt to
change folders.

I can open recent files with no problem.

I can open Windows Explorer, locate a file, and double click to get it to
open.

This appears to be a Vista issue, since the same crash is happening in more
than one text editing program. It was not an issue when I first installed
Office XP or Open Office 2, but I suppose it's possible that some activity
since the installation of these apps has caused the issue.

Any suggestions?

Hi Peter,

Yeah, I realise it was a bit, uh, presumptuous on my part :-) So, apologies
for apologising presumptuously :-))

Obviously problems need to be directed towards the best forum to solve them;
and many people post inappropriate questions to this group (my favourite was
the guy who asked "how can I join two cells in my speadsheet?"; no mention
of Vista, Windows or even what speadsheet app he was using!).

But many problems have a kind of grey area around their definition, such
that it's an open question whether it's really an OS issue, a network issue,
a security issue, an application issue, or possibly even a "DUI" ("dumb
user issue" :-). In these cases, my personal preference is to try to add
some value, even if I'm basically redirecting the user to another forum. I
know squat about Office; but I think a crashing desktop application is the
kind of issue any skilled computer technician can help to solve.

Or maybe it's just too reminiscent of cheap and nasty help desks, where the
support guys all say "Nah, it's not our problem, call the other vendor".

And, in this case the poster had a semi-reasonable and explicitly stated
opinion, that his issue was related to the OS, not to the applications. So,
it would behove any responder to at least verify it is not an OS issue,
before redirecting. In my opinion.

Anyway, I think we're actually agreeing on 98.5% of the matter! What we
really need to find, is a log which says "Access Violation 0xC0000005 in
WINWORD.EXE at 0x00341234", where 0x00341234 is the address of MSO.DLL. Or
whatever. Otherwise it's all too vague and amorphous to solve in an positive
way.

Best regards
Andrew
