Office XP programs hangs when trying to change directories

Recently all of my MS Office XP programs hangs up when, exp. im in word and try to open a document in another directory. Picking open existing doc. and having to change directories, as soon as i pick the down arrow to change the directory it hangs up then "not responding" appears. This also happens in outlook when trying to insert an attachment. Does it in word, excel, outlook, publisher, etc...
I would appreciate any advice ya'll can give

I also find this problem from time to time.

Sometimes, I have found this can be cleared by cleaning out the autocomplete
cache from your computer - you can do this in the Internet Explorer Options.
