Office XP hangs

When i use office xp, when saving a doc, the drop down
menu for getting to a folder hangs for a long time, also
when saving a doc, word dissapears the first time i try to
save, i have to reopen again and resave, providing i did a
selecrt all and a copy so i can re past the info back in
to a new doc. after loosing a ton of work i have been
highlighting everything in the doc / copy, before hiting
the save button. so is this a known problem?
