There is no Vista version of Word. Are you perhaps referring to Word 2007?
If so, you have to save a document if Word XP format so that you can open
the document in Word XP.

First, note that this has nothing to do with "Word (Vista)" vs.
"Word(XP)." In fact there's no such thing as "Word (Vista)" or Word
for Windows XP. Your problem is that the files were created by Word
2007, which can run under either Windows XP or Windows Vista.

You have two choices:

1. Ask the person who created the file to use "Save as" and save it
the old .doc format instead of the new .docx format.

2. Install the free "Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word,
Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats" that lets you read the new
formats. Go to

The operating systems are completely immaterial to this question.
Do you have the same version of Word on both computers? If not be sure,
when using the newer version of Word, top save the documents in a format
that the older version can read.
