Just wanted to pass on a problem I have with Vista and MS Office. When I try
to change the Office Assistant I get an error message telling me there's not
enough memory to open the options/gallery file. I contacted Microsoft and
they were able to duplicate the condition on their computers. They said they
don't know how to fix it but will let me know when they get a patch or a new
version is released without the problem.

Sorry, I should have included that. Vista Home Premium and MS Office Student
and Teacher Edition 2003. I also had the same problem with a trial copy of
MS Office Small Business 2003. The SB edition was loaded on the computer
when I bought it. I didn't want to spend $400 so I bought the S/T edition
and figured the problem would go away when I installed the new version,
however, it didn't. MS told me it's a conflict between Vista and Office but
they don't know how to fix it right now.

Hi Carl, This is Linda. I'm the one with the problem. No, as I stated in my
original post MS was able to duplicate the error but they didn't know how to
fix it. They told me they'd let me know when they develop a patch or a new
version is released. I'm not particularly interested in a new version; I'm
not happy with this one. I certainly don't need a whole new set of problems!

What error? Office help states:
"...The online Help feature in the 2007 Microsoft Office system has been
completely redesigned, and the new design does not include the Microsoft
Office Assistant...."

Gee, doesn't anyone here read the posts? As I previously stated, I'm using
MS Office 2003 Student/Teacher Edition. It does have the Office Assistant.

You are right, I didn't read the post. However, you should ask MS Office
questions in the Office newsgroups, this is not one of them.

Hi Linda, I too am having exactly the same problem with exactly the same
software. Unfortunately I changed to the annoying red blob before upgrading
to Vista and am now stuck with it. All I want is the little dog to come back!
Would really appreciate it if you could let me know of any fix that Microsoft
comes up with.
Cheers... Dangermouse. Australia

Hi Linda (et al),

First off, in the Vista Community Discussions, all Vista-related issues are
welcomed topics. Linda asserts that MS agrees that this is a Vista
compatibility issue, so the thread seems valid and properly placed. I agree
that members of other discussions might also find this information useful, so
I hope the Office users find this thread using this site's Topic Search
feature.

Now, about the error "There is not enough memory available to complete this
operation."

You may receive this error when using Vista and running any member of the MS
Office Suite (among many SKUs, including Business, Student & Teacher, or
Professional), such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or Publisher. So far, I have
determined the error affects Office XP Professional, Office 2002, and Office
2003 utilities when using any creative means to view the Office Assistant
Gallery or change Office Assistants. The error occurs regardless of User
type, and will occur even if you run your application "as Administrator".

So far, the most likely cause I can find relates to the (unselectable) check
in the box labeled "Run in separate memory space." To view this box:

- Right-click an MS Office application's shortcut;
- Select the "Shortcut" tab;
- Click the Advanced button;

Yes, right there - that little grey line at the bottom.

So, I'm working on it, and I'll post more as warranted. In the meantime,
maybe someone can offer suggestions for removing the "separate memory space"
designation (or applying some method to run Office applications in shared
memory...?).

Thanks for sharing my problem,

Sy

Thank you sooooo..... much for sharing your "fix" with us. I tried it and it
does work! It is a bit of a bother if you want to change again, but, after
going through the steps for the first time, it is relatively easy. I do
advise, as you have, if you don't know what you're doing, find a friend that
can. Always regard the "registry area" as "DANGER..DANGER ZONE!" It certainly
would be a shame to crash a computer for such a minor detail that MS will
resolve in the future (I'm sure they will...sometime!)
