I have Office 2003 and 2007 installed. on the same computer. Why?
I do not have both versions of Outlook installed. I have 2003
installed but do not use it.
I probably should not have both versions installed on the same
computer, so don't chastise me.
My question is: if for example I am using Word 2003 and then decide
to use Word 2007, what is happening on my computer when I get a
message saying Word 2007 in configuring the computer. What is it
configuring?
I get a similar message when going from Word 2007 to Word 2003.
I also assume I would get similar messages when switching back and
forth between the other Office applications.

Its making the changes necessary for Office/Word 2007
to run properly after using Office/Word 2003.

If the configuration process did not take place then
one version or the other would fail to run properly.

You're seeing the MS Office Compatibility Packs in action. (They were
probably installed via Microsoft Update.)

See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923505

Same answer.

Check out this article from Microsoft, especially about half way down in
reference to Word:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928091/en-us

I think it will answer all your questions and also gives instructions on how
to correct the configuring of Word by editing the registry. No you probably
won't see it in the other Office applications. You will need to apply the
registry change to Office/12.0 for Office 2007 and also to Office 11.0 for
Office 2003. I have four different computers with various combinations of
Word and this registry change made, including Word 2002 (XP) 2003, 2007,
even back to Word 2000, and have not had any issues with any version of Word
running correctly.

Hope this helps, let us know.
