I enjoy my retirement and just use the computer for fun. I am disappointed
that Outlook is not installed on my Vista Home Premium and I can't look at
pictures on PowerPoint. Do I need Office or is there something else I should
be looking at.

Hi
Seems like you need to get a third party powerpoint viewer or indeed
install office with powerpoint included, hope this helps

Yes, you would need Office to have Outlook and Powerpoint. An alternative to
PowerPoint (not sure if it has an Outlook client) is part of OpenOffice, a
free alternative to MS Office.

Although, Office 2007 was released the same time as Vista and works great
with it.

I will consider this too!

There should be a mail program installed that is more powerful than
Outlook Express, which is what came with XP, for example. You
have always had to buy Office to get the full blown Outlook. Since
I have Office 2007, I haven't looked at the included mail program,
and don't any more than I have read.

Office has never come included with a Microsoft operating system.
You can however use Windows Mail which is installed on Vista as an
alternative email program. Windows Mail is the new outlook express.

If you don't want to spend the buck$ for Office 2007, take a look at
OpenOffice. They make an excellent, Office compatible suite for free.

You can get it at http://www.openoffice.org/

It runs on XP or Vista and there are OSX and Linux versions available as
well.

Office 2007 Home and Student edition is available for $150 and can be
installed on up to 3 computers. It comes with PowerPoint, Excel, Word, and
OneNote but unfortunately, not Outlook. Outlook by itself is about $110.
Combined with the free PowerPoint viewer, this may get you what you want.

The least expensive suite that includes Outlook is

Outlook and PowerPoint are part of MS Office, and not part of MS Vista or MS
XP ((those are only the "Operating System").

I too enjoy those two programs and am using a trial version with my new
computer. However, I plan to purchase "Office Standard" version 2007 when
the trial period runs out. There are other versions..Office Home & Student
does not include Outlook, and the version above Office Standard includes
programs I/we do not use or need.

You can check out the options and prices at Microsof.com or Best Buy, or
other retailers.
It is not often these programs go on sale, but with Christmas approaching
you may find MS Office on sale.
