Off Topic - SATA verses IDE - Will IDE ever Die?

Hi All,

will IDE ever go away ?

They added SATA to the motherboards, but there are still no SATA cd's or
dvd's (or zips etc). Why don't they just get rid of IDE entirely. I for one
would be happy to replace all my old IDE devices with SATA equivalents. (of
course they'd neeed to add at least 6 SATA's on each MB).

ABIT sell an IDE/SATA converter that they claim works on hard
drives/cd's/dvd's etc, but I'd like this built in (to each 'IDE" device)
instead of having to buy another adapter that plugs into the back of each
IDE device. (more wires, more clutter)

It will take a few years, but it will eventually happen.

Plextor has announced a SATA DVD/CD burner:
http://www.plextor.com/english/news/press/712SA_pr.htm

It won't be available until May and it will be expensive.

I've tried adapters from HighPoint and ABIT and found that
while they seem to work with all IDE hard drives, they don't
seem to work with _any_ CD or DVD drives.

The adapters are small and plug right onto the back of the
hard drives - no addition cables. By letting you switch
from ribbon cables to SATA cables they actually reduce the
cable clutter.

Patience, Bill, patience. SATA optical drives are coming in the not too
distant future.

I think IDE is going to go the way the floppy did. Oh no, the floppy is
still here. That's right, you need it to load the SATA drivers. Hmmm. Well
IDE can't hang on that long. We've had AMD64 for a year now and there is
plenty of apps for it. MS says that I can at run 32 bit apps on my WinXP64,
it just that it won't let me install them. Just as well, I can't install
WinXP64 on my SATA because there are no drivers.

Maybe we better keep IDE around for a while.

I think IDE will outlive SATA as I believe you'll need SATA2 for CD's
and optical drives.

Not quite true. For some reason SATA is a PITA for
manufacturers of optical drives, but Plextor recently
demonstrated that it *can* be done. Plextor has
demoed a SATA DVD/CD burner and adapters that will
let their PATA drives by used with SATA ports.

I know someone who knows someone who saw Plextor's
SATA drive in action at a show. Not quite the direct
evidence I would like to have, but other than that
all there is is the press releases from Plextor.
