R Titterton

Yesterday I posted two queries and received a number of quality replies.
This is the first time since 1997 that I have used a newsgroup.

Now, I have the normal antiviral software installed - it rarely gets the
chance to do it's thing. I probably attract about 1 malignant item every 6
weeks.

This morning I logged on to read any replies. I also downloaded my mail.
Out of the normal 100 mail items I received the normal 1 legitimate message
and 99 spam items. Of these 12 were infected items. I cannot believe that
this is a coincidence.

Your e-mail address has been grabbed by the spammers I'm afraid. They have
programs to trawl through newsgroups and harvest addresses to send you this
s**t, which they will do relentlessly. You can either change your address or
set up filters and rules to block the spam, but realistically (I speak from
experience!) its best to change your address with all the grief that
entails.
If you go for rules and filters, DON'T hit any unsubscribe options, they
just use these to confirm the address is valid then sell them on.
Golden rule, don't use your valid e-mail address in newsgroups, sad, but a
fact of life.
Regards,
Alan.
