I've ran up against this no transport provider available and am out of
ideas. I reinstalled Of97, SR1, SR2 and Ol98, but still end up with the
error message. OS is SE.

Have you tried creating a fresh profile in the Control Panel's Mail applet?

No I hadn't. Thank You very much for reminding me of that method of
attempting a fix from long ago. I had tried recreating the components of the
profile and just discovered that there seemed to be a problem with the PAB.
I would get an error when trying to get the properties.
All is better now. I can send my self a test and I have mail coming in.
Now if I can trouble everyone for the best way to retrieve, import, etc. my
old mail. Would it be worth an attempt of running pst repair?

It probably wouldn't hurt to repair your previous PST file before trying to
use it

The repair tool didn't work. It said it did though. I have to wonder, was
there more than one version of it available?

I also have to ask about encrytion of a newly created PST. Is this
advisable? That is, do the risks out weigh the benefits? I think it was
during the creation of the new profile, but it may have been during the
creating of a second store, it showed the default of encrypting? I don't
remember seeing this before.

since the repair seemed to fail, I created a second store in the troublesome
profile and then made it the main location. I hoped that maybe moving the
data into the new store would solve it. But with the empty store, I received
the same error after sending a test message.
I'm going to try using the newly created profile and adding the troublesome
pst. Hopefully I can move most of the mail over to the new store. That
worked for me back in W95 (long time ago). I only had a relatively few
messages then and was able to isolate the culprit.

I usually create my PSTs with Compressable (sp?) encryption and leave it at
that.

Sorry for the delay. I had a reply just about ready to send and the machine
went down.

Encryption settings
You can select one of three options for encoding the information in your
..pst file. You cannot change this setting after the .pst file is created.
Encryption encodes the .pst file so that it cannot be read by other
programs. . No Encryption - This option does not encode your .pst file. A
user may be able to read the .pst file with a text editor program or with a
hexidecimal editor program.
.. Compressible Encryption - This option encodes your .pst file in a format
that allows compression, but the .pst file is compressed only if you have a
compression program on your computer. The .pst file cannot be read with a
text editor or with a hexidecimal editor.
.. High Encryption - This option encodes your .pst file in a format that
offers increased protection. If you have a disk-compression program, the
..pst file can be compressed, but to a lesser degree than if you were using
the Compressible Encryption option. The .pst file cannot be read with a text
editor or with a hexidecimal editor.
The default security setting is the Compressible Encryption option. Use the
Compressible Encryption option if disk space is more important than
security. If security is more important that disk space, use the High
Encryption option, and then select a password for your .pst file.

OK, I'd found this infor about encryption. First, it appears MS may be
looking at access to the machine as the weakest link. This I discerned from
recommendations of not putting the mail files on the local machine, but
leave on the server. Not practical for me as I'm not running Exchange server
or similar. Next was the importance of passwords.
The file encryption is a little vague to me. For compressible, does that
mean you need something such as WinZip installed? And for High Encryption,
are they referring to something such as DriveSpace? And if so, is it stopped
from functioning on a FAT 32 disk?

PS I'm still trying to import the old mail into a new store since the repair
didn't work.
