OEM licenses vs product recovery.

Our company uses many IBM Thinkpad R32's pre-loaded with
Windows XP Pro. I have been asked to create a backup image
for use with these machines, but after reading all the
info I could find from Microsoft, I'm more confused than
ever. Can I create an image of an OEM version of XP, and
use it as a recovery image for any R32 we have? If not,
can I use a Volume License version of XP to create the
image, and then use it for recovery (overwrite the OEM
version) without having to buy an extra license?

Hello,

As I know, each notepad has a Recovery CD from the manufacturer. You can
just use the IBM recovery CD.

Regarding the license problem, please call 1-800-426-9400 (select option
4), Monday through Friday, 6:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. (PST) to speak directly
to a Microsoft licensing specialist. Worldwide customers can use the Guide
to Worldwide Microsoft Licensing Sites
http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/index/worldwide.asp to find contact
information in their locations.

Since different manufacturer may have different end user license agreement,
you can also contact the IBM support for more information.

Thanks.

That is not always true Vivien.

My daughter has an IBM Thinkpad 2656 which we purchased for her
earlier this year. It came with Windows XP Pro preinstalled and a
hidden "System Recovery" partition on the hard drive which contains
the factory-install image.

Pressing F11 during bootup initiates the System Recovery procedure.

There was no XP CD of any kind provided with the machine, although one
may be available (for a price) from IBM. I have not checked as yet.
