OEM license key not working

W

witchseason

I have an ASUS laptop with a licensed version of XP Pro SP2 on it, but
the laptop did not come with an installation disk - only a 'system
restore' disk.

I have borrowed a friend's OEM Windows disk and tried to install from
it, but the setup will not accept the license key on the sticker under
my machine.

I really don't want to have to go back to my factory settings, which
is all that the recovery disk allows.

Any ideas why my license key isn't being accepted?

Many thanks

Your disk from the computer manufacturer should be referred to as a
"System Recovery" rather than as a "System Restore" disk so as to
avoid confusion with the System Restore function contained in Windows
XP.

Is the OEM CD you used from the same edition of Windows XP (Home,
Professional, Media Center, Tablet) as your installed XP?

Good luck.

See if there's an i386 folder on the HD - youmay be able to burn this to a CD
and do an install from that.

HST, some OEM keys are nonworkling anyway. HP machines are known for this.
If faced with this situation, call the activation hotline and explain the
situation.

The key is locked to that type of disk and will only work with the
system recovery disk from the manufacturer.

What's the big deal? It only takes a little work to change settings.

M$ has screwed everything up because of Gates paranoia about people
stealing software even though he got his start by stealing. Guess it
takes one to know one!!!! Anyway, see if you can get the key for
that CD from your friend, then install it using that key. Then get
one of the programs that allows you to change your key or use the
directions on M$ site for changing the key to the one that's on the
bottom of your computer or the key that was on the original install
if you copied it down someplace. Be careful about some of the key
change programs, some are trojans and virus, scan before using.

The SP level of the disc needs to match that of the sticker. (Regardless of
any SP updates you've added since)

However, some OEM licence-keys are in effect dud banknotes.

One workaround is to call the activation line, type in a junk serial to get
past that stage, and ask to speak to a rep. They will usually give you a
working key.

Actually I think that is incorrect. Both Apple and MS stole it from
Xerox as I recall.

Good ideas get around.

I guess there is some sanity in this group. Yes that is partially
true. Someone posted a message about this a while back. He claims to
have worked for Xerox at the time that they were doing the GUI
thing. He says that Xerox did not develop it but was purchasing it
from someone. He would not state who but said he was going to write
a book about those early days and his experiences with Xerox. But
the common story says that Apple stole the IDEA from Xerox and of
course Gates steals everything and copied the MAC lead. Of course
Gate's piece of crap was nothing more than smoke and mirrors that
did not work when he first demonstrated it. They did finally get it
to function, somewhat. It still is not fully functional even after
all these years!!!!!! It still cannot sort worth a shit and when you
move files it changes the order????? Gates must have failed
preschool because he still cannot count or know the alphabet!!!!
