OE Import from Outlook 2000

Hi All,

I have a .PST from Windows Messaging. This is the same format used by
Outloook 2k, as far as I can tell. Anyway, my problem comes from the
fact that I am trying to convert to Outlook Express 6.

OE imports the .PST file with no problems. I have found that the file
attachment names from the Sent folder have had their names changed.
Long file names were replaced with the 8.3 name.

How can I change over to OE and still keep the same attachment names
after the conversion?

Thanks for any help,

Charles

Clarify what you did. OE cannot import a PST file.

Hi Russ,

I first loaded the .PST file into Outlook 2k. I then loaded Outlook
Express for the first time and it asked me if I wanted to import from
Outlook 2k. I said 'Yes' and the import processed fine.

In OE I looked in the 'Sent' folder. I looked for a message with an
long file name attachment and found that they were changed to 8.3 file
name format. So, a name of 'This is a long file name.xxx' will get
changed to 'Thisis~1.xxx'.

My question, is there any way to get my old emails out of Outlook 2k
and into Outlook Express 6? And keep the long file names found in
some attachment names.

Thanks for any help,

Charles

I doubt it. I doubt anyone has ever tried it before. Remember that WM is a
Windows 95 utility. I doubt "backwards compatibility" extends that far back
when you try to convert the file to another format.

Hi Russ,

Once the Windows Messaging .PST file was imported into Outlook 2000
isn't it now a Outlook 2k .PST file? After the import I deleted the
WM .PST file.

Outlook 2k shows all the file names correctly (in both my 'Inbox' and
'Sent Items' folders), in the original long file name format.

The OE 6 import from the Outlook 2k .PST file did not convert the long
file names correctly ('Sent Items' only). It changed the names to the
8.3 format. This tells me that even MS can not do the job right.
Sigh....

Please post back if you have any more ideas.

Thanks for your help,

Charles

No more ideas. Converting a Win 95 PST to an Outlook 2000 PST to and OE file
is uncharted water. I suspect it has more to do with LFN standards than the
PST itself.

Hi Russ,

Thanks for the link. Looks like this problem has been around for a
couple of years. I guess if I wait 10 more years Microsoft MIGHT fix
it.

Looks like I will have to roll my own application to do the job. Or,
maybe VBA in Outlook 2k would work. I will check into this.

Thanks for your help,

Charles
