OE crashes when listing newsgroups

Z

Zarbol Tsar

On Friday (Jan 14, 2005) I installed six Microsoft fixes from the
web. Now Outlook express crashes when I try to list the newgroups
for any of the newsservers I have got defined in OE.

In run XP Pro + SP1. The fixes I recently installed are the
following ones. The installation history says they were all
successful.

------

(1) Cumulative Update for Outlook Express 6 Service Pack 1 (KB887797)
This is version 20041112.131144.

(2) Security Update for Windows XP (KB824151)
Vulnerability in WebDAV XML message handler.

(3) Security Update for Windows XP (KB890175)
Vulnerability in HTML Help could allow code execution.

(4) Security Update for Windows XP (KB871250)
Vulnerability in the Indexing Service could allow remote code
execution.

(5) Security Update for Windows XP (KB891711)
Vulnerability in cursor and icon format handling.

(6) Last of all, I installed Q811114: Security Update (Windows XP or
Windows XP SP1) Cumulative Patch for Internet Information Services
(May 2003). I install this because the Microsoft Baseline Security
Analyzer tool said I needed it. But when I installed the patch a
message said I may not have the server software.

-------

When OE crashes, a message says Error signature: msimn.exe,
AppVer=6.0.2800.1123, ModName=unknown, Offset=71dbb107

Is it likely that the first update listed above (Cumulative Update
for OE6 SP1, KB887797) might have caused my problem?

What is the best thing to do to overcome the problem?

Thank you.

How about asking in a newsgroup for Outlook Express instead of XP?

If it were my machine, I would close OE and move Folders.dbx to another
Windows folder. You will lose your folder hierarchy in OE and have to
download the lists of newsgroups again.

But how do you know it is an OE fault and not an XP one?

Because it is happening in OE? XP provides NO, NADA, ZERO, NIL
abilities to read e-mail or newsgroups. Therefore the problem lies in
OE.
